[REVIEW] Batman: Damned – by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I’m not a comic fanatic, so my observations will be simple by comparison. That being said, I’m a fan of Batman and the idea of making darker comics and movies using that character and his world. The DC Black Label is here for such things. Batman: Damned is a mature rated horror arc told over the course of three large issues. The art is done by the awesome Bermejo, and the writing is the acclaimed Azzarello. Both of these talents have worked together on Batman before, like on Joker (which was awesome).

I loved that this story was of the horror variety and featuring a collection of guest stars (including Constantine and Swamp Thing, among others); however, the story does struggle. By the end of it all, I wasn’t entirely sure what all happened. I would have liked more explanation along the way.

Nevertheless, the art and atmosphere are top notch here. I don’t think Damned beats the other graphic novels these two have done together, but it still features some great content. I just think it needed a couple more issues to properly flesh things out.
