I recently experienced V. Castro for the first time with Queen of the Cicadas, which was great. Though Mestiza Blood is equally unsettling, violent, and sexy, I didn’t feel hooks in me during its reading. Part of the problem was the use of first-person narrative in every single story. It made the vibrations of the narrating lead too similar from one story to the next. There was also some odd pacing — thanks to several novelette sized stories in the second half — and several of the endings were abrupt or weak. That being said, there were some cool and exciting ideas throughout this collection I thoroughly enjoyed. There’s a lot of revenge, transformation, and death in these pages.
